Wink Wink
Experience the vibrant and diverse world of LGBTQIA+ artists as The Whitaker presents "WINK WINK," an extraordinary exhibition that celebrates identity and self-expression. This fruity, meaty, playful, and powerful showcase invites the public to explore and engage with the lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ artists through various mediums. With something for everyone, the exhibition will captivate visitors of all ages, backgrounds, and interests.
Curated by the renowned artist Garth Gratrix, "WINK WINK" features a remarkable lineup of 24 artists, both established and emerging, hailing from across the UK. These artists fearlessly delve into the exploration of their own identities, showcasing openness, pride, and vulnerability. Among the featured artists are Harold Offeh, Ro Robertson, SHARP, Topher Campbell, Chester Tenneson, Jez Dolan, Derek Jarman, Rene Matić, Helen Cammock, Daniel Fountain, Sarah-Joy Ford, Garth Gratrix, Jenkin van Zyl, Trackie McLeod, Harry Clayton-Wright, Jacob Talkowski, Parham Ghalamdar, Sunil Gupta, Lothar Götz, Ally Rosenberg, Will Hughes, Rafal Zajko, Stuart Semple, and Jonathan Baldock.
Garth Gratrix describes "WINK WINK" as an invitation to explore the diverse ways in which we live, think, and create. The exhibition aims to showcase artists who view the world differently and demonstrate how creativity enhances our understanding and appreciation of others. With fascination and fun in mind, the exhibition encourages viewers to embrace a kaleidoscope-like perspective, uncovering new colors, shapes, and reactions that bring wonder and joy to our lives.
"WINK WINK" is a groundbreaking exhibition, marking the first time several artists will showcase their work in the North West region and introducing The Whitaker and its audiences to their first LGBTQIA+ exhibition experience in the area. Gaynor Seville, Creative Director of The Whitaker, expresses excitement about beginning the new chapter of The Whitaker as an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation with "WINK WINK." The exhibition aligns with the organization's mission to commission and showcase thought-provoking contemporary art that offers different perspectives, experiments across mediums, and, above all, brings joy.
Visitors can expect a wide range of artistic mediums, including painting, drawing, textiles, sculpture, photography, and film. Highlights of the exhibition include a towering drag queen sculpture, rats competing in a dance marathon, innuendo neon signage, and a tracksuit designed by and for lesbians. As you navigate the exhibition, keep your eyes peeled (or winking) to fully appreciate the fantastic collections and curiosities that adorn the building.
The exhibition will launch on Thursday, May 18 at 7 pm, with an invitation for all visitors to get a sneak peek of the artwork and hear from the artists themselves.
"WINK WINK" has been exclusively commissioned by The Whitaker as part of its newly funded role as a National Portfolio Organisation, with support from Arts Council England.
