Painting an unending
PAINTING, AN UNENDING
Solo exhibition at HOME, Manchester, UK. Curated by Clarissa Corfe.
Painting, An Unending brings together painting and ceramics in an installation built around tents, vessels, fragments, and repeated forms. The tent appears again and again as shelter, threshold, stage, or ruin. It might suggest migration, waiting, exposure, or a temporary claim to space, but the work resists fixing any one reading. The ceramics echo this condition. Placed on plinths like relics or broken offerings, they feel partly bodily and partly architectural, as if they have survived from another time without carrying a stable story with them.
The exhibition moves through memory, displacement, and image culture by returning to the same forms and testing them under different pressures. AI-generated imagery enters the work as source material, but it is not left untouched. It is repainted, slowed down, and made uncertain. What matters here is probably less the novelty of the tool than the tension it produces: between hand and machine, authorship and mediation, desire and censorship. The show treats repetition as a way to work through those tensions without pretending they can be resolved.

Workshops
Funded by The Prince’s Trust as part of Painting, An Unending at HOME, these workshops brought together a lecture, a studio session, and an exhibition outcome. I introduced participants to a brief history and philosophy of AI, looking at how machine vision, training data, and image production shape what can be seen, repeated, or distorted. Participants then made paintings and clay works, which were used as source material to train a GAN model. The resulting AI-generated images were printed and shown as part of the exhibition, linking collective making, technical process, and display within the wider logic of the show.
With the generous assistance of artist Alice Merida Richards, the ceramics made for the "Painting, An Unending" exhibition were fired and glazed at The Manchester Ceramic Collectivestudios.
