PROFORMA launched LOITER, a one-day live visual art programme highlighting the significance of the Chapel Street area as one of the oldest trade routes connecting Manchester and Salford, and an area seemingly in constant flux. Continuing their programme of creating time-restricted exhibitions in non-gallery spaces, PROFORMA commissioned two artists to create new, ephemeral artworks that reflect the vibrancy of this area and form part of the LOITER programme. Selected artists also benefited from a tailored mentor and career development package.
In an effort to reduce travel, a live digital experience of LOITER is available for those outside of the surrounding Chapel Street area so you can still interact without attending.
Parham Ghalamdar was selected by the juries to produce a trio short animation by expanding his paintings into the realm of digital art. The finalized works are montages of hand-drawn expressive animations alongside edited archival footage borrowed from the North West Film Archive and Manchester Metropolitan University’s special collection. The inspiration for the animations is the British working-class painter, Clifford Hooper Rowe and his modernist paintings from 1930’s. These paintings were narrating and celebrating British industry and the working class contribution to the society, especially within Manchester.
During the research, development and mentorship period Ghalamdar searched the archives mentioned above to gather stories in order to come up with assets for the animations. He will then incorporate an anti-narrative approach to the materials to produce short sequences. The anti-narrative approach of storytelling methods is borrowed from the Shahrzad character who is the muse of the One Thousand And One Nights myth. Shahrzad tells a fresh story every day to “forestall death, to postpone the day of reckoning that would silence the narrator” (Foucault, 1980) by postponing the punch line to tomorrow. This episodic approach of reporting will be manifested in the animation by displaying a scene and skipping to another one without any conclusion; such suspension grows even stronger when a scene is on the loop. Jumping from one scene to another and the way each episode connects to the next one, all together, create a mood as if one is watching TV and hysterically changing channels one after another, hoping that there was a good ending to the little absurdist scene just watched. The result of such approach is an open-ending film which changing the order of the sequences has little or no effect on understanding and making sense of the narration: an anti-narrative film, an attempt to educate rather than dictating and stirring emotions for the sake of populism, opportunism and propaganda.
The soundtrack of Glitching Yard 2020 is produced by Kaveh Soory who contributed to the animations as a sound technician. Kaveh is a musician and sound engineer who graduated from the University of Salford.
