Synopsis
Families shaken by serious quarrels are pushed to their limits. This also applies to the Amani family, who portray Abbas Maroufi on their behalf. One of the sons, the communist Madjid, has fled his homeland and encounters his past as a patient in a mental hospital in Aachen. A time when he and his brothers became politicized against their father's will: Assad joined Khomeini's organization and quickly occupied important positions, Said became a member of the Mujahideen and Iraj, the imprisoned "enemy of the revolution", was threatened with execution.
Maroufi's style is concise. Everything is one, narrative levels merge seamlessly. If we just follow a conversation between Madjid and a fellow patient, in the next sentence we are sitting in a car that is supposed to bring the fugitive back to Iran. The novel is a mirror of the revolution, one cannot escape its dynamism. Maroufi condenses the events into a concentrated portrait of that dramatic time.
